Classroom Applications-ESOL
Step 1. Choose a lesson.
From the set of lesson plans provided in the Approaches to Teaching ELs, choose one lesson. Thoroughly read the background material about the particular approach to teaching ELs that your lesson is drawn from as well as the actual lesson you selected. Make sure to choose just one lesson for your analysis.
Step 2. Identify 1-2 connections to theories.
Reflect on the language acquisition theories we have explored in this class. (Possible theories are listed below. Refer back to Module 3 – Learning Materials for relevant learning materials, as well as the Module 7 – Discussion/Activity). Identify 1-3 language acquisition theories that you see reflected in the strategies and activities present in the lesson you chose.
Van Lier & Walqui’s model of Language as Action (Van Lier & Walqu’s theory of language as action is one example of a sociocultural theory. See the video of Ada Walqu in Module 3, as well.)
Garca and colleagues’ work on translanguaging
Steven Krashen’s Natural Approach (Referenced in the chart on p. 22 in “Changes in the Expertise of ESL Professionals. This has been an influential theory in the past and you can easily find lots more about it on the Internet.)
Cummins’s ideas of linguistic interdependence and common underlying proficiency
Language for academic purposes
Diane Larsen-Freeman’s ideas about the relationship between complexity theory and second language acquisition (see the optional video of Diane Larsen-Freeman in Module 3 as a starting place)
Step 3. Write Classroom Application paper using the required template.
Write a 4-6 page reflection paper describing the theory (or theories) you selected and how they are reflected in the strategies and activities in the lesson you chose. Use the required template. Answer each section in the template. Directional information in the template is in italics. Delete directional information prior to submitting your assignment.

Guidelines
This reflection should be approximately 4-6 pages with an additional reference page.
You must connect your ideas to the concepts and texts from your ESOL course. Include references to course texts and outside materials following American Psychological Association (APA) format. In your references, be sure to include the lesson you chose, along with a link to the lesson online so your instructor can refer to them if necessary.
Refer to Purdue’s Online Writing Lab for APA guidelines.
Carefully edit for spelling, grammar, punctuation, and other mechanics of formal writing.
