Discussion Post: How is Dialectical Behavior Therapy distinguished from Cognitive Behavior Therapy?

THIS IS THE RESPOND TO THE MAIN POST ABI

Dialectical behavior therapy is often used when clients have a hard time managing painful emotions. These emotions can be from trauma, grief, or from relationships causing conflict. One of the main focuses is mindfulness. Mindfulness helps the client accept the present situation and assists them in the art of being present. Distress tolerance is used to help the client build a tolerance to negative emotions. This assists them in getting through the moments and not attempting to escape. Emotion regulation would follow, increasing a person’s ability to manage these negative emotions. Lastly, communication towards others in further stressful situations is covered, assisting in future situations that may cause strong emotions. This type of therapy was made for those with borderline personality disorder since their life deals with a lot of conflicts.

When Dialectical behavior therapy deals with emotions, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy centers around modifying negative thoughts mainly. It is extremely solution-oriented, focused on how behavior is set on one’s thoughts.  Cognitive-behavioral therapy has been found to be successful with disorders such as PTSD, depression, and anxiety.

Dialectical behavior therapy focuses on the present, but also the future. Cognitive-behavioral therapy focuses on the present mainly because those are where the negative thoughts are coming from. There is a lot of emphasis on not looking at one’s past in Cognitive-behavioral therapy, so one does not dwell on those negative experiences that may have caused these emotions. However, it is very important to get a brief family history to understand past trauma or family health history.

Dialectical behavior therapy usually works when people have extreme emotions that seem uncontrollable when around other people. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is about one’s inner thoughts. These could be if someone is with people or alone.
