Symbol and Reflection
Symbol and Reflection
These assignments are outlined in the last two slides of the Learning Module 2 “What is Gender” attachment.
Complete two activity assignments:
1) the personal reflection (this should be in-depth, not just quick response; write at least 1 page of response) and
2) create a symbol for your individual gender — Create an original symbol unique to your and your own gender/gendered experiences/gendered lifestyle, etc. This should be something you would post in your room, give to someone else as a present, or just have in a drawer or envelope that you can look at for yourself and your own self-reflective moments. You can include comic strips or political cartoons, found objects (things you may have around your house, in the recycling bin, or anywhere else), newspaper or magazine clippings, drawings, paintings, collages, etc. or anything you can think of that would help convey your message and ideas in artistic creative form. Items do not need to be adhered together, but they should be laid out in a way that has meaning and furthers your definition of gender and art.
Post the photo(s)/images and accompanying statement on your student blog.
Include a 1 page description of your intentions with this symbol creation as well as connections to course readings and work during the week. In your discussion of the symbol consider: Why did you select these images or objects? Why did you arrange them in the way you did? What do they say about you and your current understanding of gender? What additional questions do they raise for you? Use these as prompts to develop your thinking but then further relay your own thoughts and connections to course readings beyond these initial guideposts.
