No Human Being Is Illegal
No Human Being Is Illegal
This is a English class and I need a position essay.
A text-based argument, 800 words minimum, formatted in MLA or APA, with a Works Cited List.
Please write a position paper in response to Mae Ngai essay, No Human Being Is Illegal. You will argue for or against a position on this issue, agreeing or disagreeing with Ngai, while using the article as a source and a reference. Please use this essay as a primary resource. You are allowed to use outside sources, but only as a secondary resource. You can also support your points with examples from your knowledge and experience. The reader of your essay is interested in how well you develop your arguments on your own. This essay is not a research paper. Your arguments will be valued, rather than an expert’s arguments you quote. Use quotes to back up the arguments that you make.
Here are some points to consider when you write your position essay.
The Introduction: Try to engage the reader’s interest in your topic, possibly by opening with a striking quotation, a vivid image, or an anecdote. Briefly summarize the essay and the controversy surrounding the topic and state your position on it.
The Body: Give several good reasons for your position, in order of importance. (Make sure that the reasons you give are different from one another–in another words, that you are not simply repeating the same idea in different words.) Support your reasons with evidence in the form of personal experience, testimony of others, research findings, statistics etc.
Include counterarguments. One way to strengthen your argument and show that you have a deep understanding of the issue you are discussing is to anticipate and address counterarguments or objections. By considering what someone who disagrees with your position might have to say about your argument, you show that your have thought things through, and you dispose of some of the reasons your audience might have for not accepting your argument.
The Conclusion: You can end by briefly summarizing your argument. You may want to make an ethical or emotional appeal, encouraging the reader to reconsider his/her thinking on an issue or urging the reader to take some action. Or you can point to the larger implications of your argument, highlighting the importance of what you have written about.
Be sure to follow the MLA or APA format throughout the essay. Provide a “Works Cited” page at the end of your essay and cite your source(s) appropriately by following the MLA or APA format.
Ethos, Pathos, and Logos: A good argumentative essay requires a somewhat balanced use of ethos, pathos, and logos. Without ethos, your essay will not carry credibility; without pathos, it won’t have effective emotional affect; and without logos, don’t expect that your audience will buy into your argument.
Select a title that describes or announces the topic without restating the thesis statement. Because your title will create an important first impression, make sure it is interesting.
Integrate quotations into your text and use them for help in making your point. Don’t leave a quote or paraphrase by itself– you must introduce it, explain it, and show how it relates to your thesis.
