we will be discussing Production Design. Production Design is the art of creating the “look and feel” of a film. Production Design includes a film’s color palette, wardrobes, props, locations and overall style. Part of the Production Designer’s job is making the look and feel of the film’s world consistent. Think of the slick steel nighttime world of The Dark Knight or the sunlit explosion of primary colors in a Bollywood musical. For this journal assignment, I would like you to think about the types of visual “looks” that interest you. Cast a wide net. Think about movies, TV, paintings, commercials, web series, photographs – anything that employs visuals. From that pool of options, list your 10 favorite visual looks. Now study the list. What trends do you see? Do you notice any specifics that the items on the list share in common? For example, do you like darkness or bright colors, claustrophobic interior spaces or wide open fields bathed in natural light? Is there a kind of camera movement you are drawn to? An editing style? Finally, consider your observations in the context of your final project for this class. What type of look would you like your movie to have? To be clear, I am asking you for more than a list.
