Ethics and Practice Paper (50 points)

Students will write a paper focused on relevant codes of ethics and determine if certain behaviors are a

violation of the GA Code of Ethics. This is one of the required “electronic portfolio” artifacts needed to

demonstrate achievement of program standards for students in the MAT program in Special Education-General

Curriculum. Students in the MAT program must obtain a passing grade (i.e., 70% or better) in order to pass the

course. In addition, MAT students must upload the last version of this item to Tk20 by the date designated in

this syllabus or communicated later to students.

Answer the first two questions below (#1 and #2, below) in essay form. The two codes of ethics you will be using

are the Code of Ethics for Educators (from the Georgia Professional Standards Commission) and the Code of Ethics

and Standards for Professional Practice for Special Educators (from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)).

As always, if you use an exact quote you need to use quotation marks. For this assignment, you do not need to use

a formal citation and reference unless you are using information from an outside item – one that is not part of

this assignment, i.e., something other than the items posted for your use in this assignment. (It would make most

sense for you just to get information from the items that are part of this assignment, but if you do use an

outside item you need to cite it within your essay and include it in a list of references at the end of your

paper.) Summaries should be in your own words.
Identify each component of the codes of ethics you select to include in your responses according to the code of

ethics from which it comes, its designation, and its full name (e.g., CEC Special Education Professional Practice

Standards – Assignment and Role 3 – “Professionals practice only in areas of exceptionality, at age levels, and

in program models for which they are prepared by their training and/or experience.”).
Be sure to check out the grading rubric before you get started. The APA style manual will be used as the

authoritative source related to writing mechanics; however, more primitive errors that are not included in the

APA manual (e.g., random isolated letters in the middle of sentences, using title case for common nouns) also

will count as errors.

1. Utilizing the UWG Disposition Rubrics you are evaluated on at the end of each semester, how are the

dispositions rubrics connected to the Georgia Codes of Ethics and the Council of Exceptional Children’s (CEC)

Code of Ethics? Address this question in general and also point out and explain a connection between aspects of

the dispositions rubric that is used for your evaluation and three specific components of the codes of ethics

that are the focus of this class. (A copy of the dispositions rubric, GA Code of Ethics, and the CEC Code of

Ethics can be located in the module with this assignment.) ( 20 points)

2. Identify five standards of the Georgia Codes of Ethics or the Council of Exceptional Children’s Ethical

Standards that you consider to be most important in your current and/or future practice as an educator. For each,

which code it comes from and explain why you selected it and why it is important to you. (20 points)
