Genre Analysis
Genre Analysis
Based on the focus on genre and generic conventions you defined in your exploratory drafts (Literary Dystopia, Realism OR Horror), answer the following thesis questions:
1) How does Shirley Jackson align or subvert the conventions for two of these genres in her short story, “The Lottery”? What is Jackson’s purpose in utilizing these generic conventions? How does her use of these generic conventions evoke an emotional response in her 1948 The New Yorker audience, and in turn, help convey a specific message? For example, what is Jackson “saying” about tradition and ritual? Or what might she be “saying” about pointless violence and the darker aspects of human nature such as brutality and dehumanization? Or what might she be “saying” about intellect versus superstition? Or the randomness of persecution? How does she utilize generic conventions to help convey a message based on one of these ideas? (Or you may consider other “ideas” conveyed in her short story). Address ONLY ONE idea in the paper. In other words, try to connect the use of genre conventions to how Jackson communicates a particular message (theme).
(examples of the message: dangers of unchecked tradition, pointless violence, general inhumanity in their lives, dangers conformity/group/group think, the allusion of innocence of the reader, everyday social evil) choose only one for the larger message
You must utilize at least four sources beyond Wikipedia and “The Lottery,” and directly quote, summarize, or paraphrase from those sources as support/evidence for your definition. However, the majority of this essay should be in your own words.
