Evaluation essays are where you read a series of articles about a topic. Now, many people have been writing about this topic and there are, of course, many different experiences and points of view about it. Your job will be to write an essay that discusses what these various authors have to say (in other words, paraphrasing and summarizing their ideas) about the topic and also evaluate whether you think these particular sources of information are reliable, logical or accurate. Mostly, this evaluation takes place in the conclusion, but you can also do some evaluation in the body paragraphs. Ultimately though, in the conclusion, you are giving your opinion about the topic – meaning, you are adding your voice to this ongoing conversation.

You must use at least three of the articles below. You can use more, if you wish. 🙂 This essay will also be longer – 1250 words. Here are the articles:

Before turning in your essay, make sure that:

1. You have explained the issue or case sufficiently in the introduction. Tell the reader why this topic is necessary to discuss.

3. Your thesis statement tells the reader what the essay will be about, but does not explicitly tell the reader your position.

4. Your essay not only discusses what research/ideas you agree with, but also a refutation of research/ideas you do not agree with.

5. You cannot use direct quotes, so instead, you will have to paraphrase. Even paraphrases will need in-text citations.

6. Use the template below so you will be sure that your formatting will be accurate.

7. Look at the rubric below to make sure you included all the aspects of the essay that are needed and that you will be graded on.
