You are an eCommerce consultant and have been contacted by the owner of an established lighting company, BriteLite, which specialises in supplying a range of lighting goods to other businesses, particularly high street retailers such as furniture and lighting stores.
BriteLite designs a range of lighting goods in-house, which are then manufactured in factories by business partners around the world. The lighting includes:

? Wall lights
? Table lights
? Floor lights
? Spotlights
? Security lights
The lights are currently supplied to other businesses and retailers within your region. Sales are made to these customers through a combination of hard copy catalogues and follow-up visits from sales representatives. The details and associated costs of these sales channels are as follows:
? Hard copy catalogue: produced twice yearly, with 10,000 copies printed on each occasion and mailed directly to the customer base. The total cost of this exercise, including design, printing and distribution, is £26,000 per annum
? Sales representatives: two full time sales staff, one part time member of support staff and two company cars. The total cost of this is £102,000
The annual turnover of the company is £1.5million, but the net profit is just £75,000. Sales are relatively static, and are restricted primarily to existing customers within the region.
The owner of BriteLite is keen to explore the possibility of setting up a B2B eCommerce website in order to sell directly to business customers within your region and to other business customers overseas.
The client has advised you to conduct a feasibility study and produce some documentation to assist him in making a decision about whether to proceed with the project.
Assignment
Task 1 – 5 Marks
You need to do some research to familiarise yourself with the subject area and to gain some ideas about how you can carry out the rest of the project. There are a number of eCommerce sites that sell lighting goods to the retail trade. Use a maximum of 1 hour to review these resources. Bookmark the relevant sites and make brief typed notes of information that you can use in your assignment.
Task 2 – 5 Marks
Produce a project plan for the way you intend to complete the rest of this assignment. For planning, use the timescale you have been allocated for this assignment i.e. from the date you start to the date you submit your assignment. Submit a copy of your plan to your tutor BEFORE you proceed further with the assignment.

Task 3 – 24 Marks
Using PowerPoint or a similar tool, prepare a maximum of fifteen slides that could be used to form the basis of a presentation to outline a business case which will support the development and launch of the new B2B eCommerce site. The presentation should address:
? The range of business benefits that the eCommerce site could potentially deliver to BriteLite, including benefits in relation to supply chain management and business processes;
? Any benefits that BriteLite’s business partners might gain from the new site;
? A cost justification case for moving forward with the new site that includes the range of cost savings that might be achieved, the estimated increase in sales resulting from the new site, and an indication of the likely cost of developing the new site (you should speak to your tutor if you are
unclear about the likely costs of developing and implementing the e-commerce solution).
The business case should also review the possible implications to the business of NOT going ahead with the development of the new site. You will be marked on the presentation slides and do not have to give a presentation.
Task 4 – 22 Marks
Produce a marketing plan of no more than 1200 words which considers how the new B2B eCommerce site should be promoted to both existing and new customers. It should include a focus on attracting new customers from overseas countries. The plan should specifically address the role of each of the following marketing activities in helping to ensure the effective promotion of the new e-Commerce site:
? Branding
? E-mail marketing
? Banner adverts
? CRM
? Search engine optimisation
Task 5 – 15 Marks
Put together an overview of no more than 500 words that explains what EDI is and briefly describes THREE (3)examples of how it can be used over the Internet to help streamline business processes.
Task 6 – 15 Marks
Produce a list (of no more than 500 words) that describes FIVE (5) different ways in which the use of web technology could potentially improve the logistics services used by BriteLite to deliver their lighting products to retail customers.
Task 7 – 14 Marks
Produce a note (of no more than 500 words) that defines a private store and a customer portal and describes how they might be used on a website to enhance the level of service offered to customers in a B2B environment. Select which of these models you believe might offer the greatest potential for use on the BriteLite eCommerce site and give the reason(s) for your choice.
