Author: Harris Interactive.com (2002) “College Students Spend $200 Billion per Year”. Electronic Version, Spring, 2002, pg. 1-3, www.harrisinteractive.com/news
Summary: Harris Interactive fielded an online national study during the 2002 spring semester to measure spending among college students from age 18-30. This age group represents 72% of the 15.6 million college students in the U.S. The study included all types of college students including: full-time, part-time, 2 year and 4 year students and concentrated on consumer behaviors and buying habits. Results from the test show that the college students in the U.S. spend $200 billion per year on a wide range of products. Among the top products sold, technology and telecommunications reached record highs. This particular study is conducted twice a year in the fall and spring semesters and reaches 6,000 college students annually.
Background: The basis for this article is to show U.S. college students have significant power in the market and marketers need to direct their attention towards young consumers. The primary reason marketers need to connect with this demographic group is because college students are making many first-time purchases and reaching them at an early age can establish patterns of buyer loyalty. The main reason that this segment is often overlooked is because marketers track consumer behavior that tends to under-represent college students.
Findings: Spending money on technology plays a central role in a college student’s life. College students are by far the most connected group in the population with 93% accessing the Internet on a regular basis. 92% of all college students own a computer and 13% plan to purchase one in the next year. 69% own a cell phone with 18% planning to purchase one in the next year. Among the first to purchase a new technological device, college students stand at 15%, while 53% say they are likely to purchase a new gadget after their friends buy. 32% say that they are willing to wait for popularity to wear off before making the purchase.
Reaction to the article (what did you think): I thought that this article was interesting because the technology statistics were so high. Other segments of the study that were also interesting were music, video games and DVD’s. These segments of the market bring in just under $8 million alone. I realize now why Chadron almost shrivels up and dies in the summer after students move home.
