Whenever you read or hear an interesting or questionable argument about an ethical issue, remember or copy it, then write a summary [if it is online, give a URL link] and comment for the Dustbin. Whenever one of your classmates posts an argument or comment that seems interesting or questionable, write a response for the Dustbin.
You should start a thread every other week. You should also respond to one of your classmates' threads every other week. The deadline for submission each week is Friday at 11.59pm.
The best grades will go to posts which:
summarize clearly and accurately
comment or critique incisively
are alert to the complexity of ethical concepts and issues
are sensitive to the nuances, ambiguities and beauties of language
show an understanding of ethical principles and approaches, and an ability to apply them
maintain civility even in disagreement.
A detailed brief and a grading rubric are available in the assessment guide in Modules/Key

It is often said that the modern age is one of increasing individualism. Describe two key features of the thought of Pico Della Mirandola, as presented in his Oration on the Dignity of Man, and two key features of the thought of Rene Descartes, as Presented in Meditations 1-2 of his Meditations on First Philosophy, that likely reflect, as well as encouraged, the spirit of modern individualism.
In your essay you must present one brief quotation from Pico's Oration, and two brief quotations from Descartes' Meditations 1-2 (one quotation from Meditation 1, and one quotation from Meditation 2). Each of the three quotations must contain at least two complete sentences. Also, each quotation must be put in quotation marks, with a brief informal citation, including a page reference. The quotations MUST be drawn from the versions of the Oration and the Meditations to be found in the Readings folder on Blackboard.
Question #2 (30%) Imagine that you are tasked with creating blueprints for the role of technology in some new society. Using Rawls Original Position thought experiment, provide an argument justifying the appropriate role (or, lack thereof) in this new society for one of the following technologies: a) self-checkout machines b) lab-grown meat c) drones
Be sure to include specific ways (policies, rules, laws, etc.) that this new technology might best be implemented in the imagined society, within the realm of possibility. Your answer should be between 3-4 pages (double-spaced), and include engagement with lectures and at least one course reading. Your essay will be assessed based on your demonstrated understanding of the materials, critical thinking skills, and quality of writing/ adherence to style guidelines (whether MLA, APA, or Chicago)
