Endurance running

Purpose:  This discussion will provide an opportunity to synthesize information learned in this module into your own original ideas that are based on evidence and observations from previously published works.

The goals are:        1. To gain a deeper understanding early accounts of human endurance running.

2. To practice critical thinking by creating a logical progression of ideas supported by peer reviewed evidence/observations.

3.  To practice writing clearly with correct grammar.

Task:  You are required to write a paragraph about how endurance running impacted a individuals in the culture we read and lectured on.  Your post should be your own original interpretation of the information we reviewed.  You are required to use 1 reference/quotation.  There is no required format for this citation, but should state something like "according to title of the paper or the lecture".

For essays, be as thorough as you can. Each answer should be at least 15 sentences. But try to be precise and structured. Also, use original examples (not ones from class). You are free to answer the questions in as much room as youd like (over the 15 sentence minimum). The most important thing is that you show me mastery of content.



You will be graded on these essays in terms of: a) originality; b) the amount of thorough reasoning that you use; c) structure; d) examples; e) citations. Remember, whenever you make any kind of point always be as thorough as possible, argue rather than state, and illustrate it using an example.



Answer all questions:



1. Does the modern, digital world make life more or less absurd? Why?

Use Nagels OR Camuss concept of absurd in order to detail your answer.
Make sure to use original examples in order to support your view. Note: You can have complex answers like, it makes it absurd in ___ way but not a

Read the Nagel and Camus article. Who do you think applies better to absurdity in the context of technology? Why?

For example, Camus talks about the working human being pushed up against the absurdity of life? Is he more accurate today than any other time in history? Nagel talks about our split selves. Is he accurate about digital tech splitting our perspectives even more?

Introduction to Philosophy

The final exam is a series of short essay questions arranged by author or theme.  Students may omit any one question of their own choosing.  (There is no extra credit for answering a 9th question and I will grade the first eight questions I see.) Students will ultimately answer eight short essay questions worth twelve points each. 

Answer Range is 1-2 paragraphs

1.)    Present Aristotles Doctrine of Mean.  Students must develop at minimum two virtues to present the point and adequately develop the necessary condition for virtue. 


2.)    Recount the three kinds of friendships discussed by Aristotle in the Nicomachean Ethics.  Students should list two characteristics or qualities of each and then state the key difference between good (virtuous) friendship and the other two. 


3.)    According to Aristotle, what is the aim of political science and how does it try to achie

What do you think of Hobbes's theory of the origin of morality? If there were no central authority, would we sink into the state of nature? Don't forget that the justification for your opinions should aim to persuade the reader.

Write a two page (500 to 700 words) essay answering the questions above. Remember that your goal as a philosopher is to persuade the readers that your conclusions are universally true.

1. Content 75% Did you accurately explain at least three themes of the philosophy? Did you superficially retell what you learned about this philosophy (average), or did you offer unique insights, applications, or criticisms (good to superior)? Did you avoid the logical fallacies and present sound arguments?

2. Readability & Style 15% Is your writing clear and well organized? If you read your essay aloud, is it clear? Does it flow well? Check for grammatical and spelling errors since these will decrease clarity.

3. Mechanics 10% MLA, 12 point font, double spaced, at least 3 full pages. You may write up to 7 pages.
