This assignment is the first step in a three part project. You only need to focus on part one at this point. Each step will build on earlier steps. However, it is not a matter of providing a rough draft of all or even part of the entire project here in week three. That is, further steps might require completely new and original text. At the same time, completing each step will aid you in completing a future step or future steps. And, you should use the same topic in all steps.
First, select a topic of moral controversy, debate, disagreement, and dispute, Examples of such topics are euthanasia, the death penalty, abortion, cloning, etc. You can pick any such topic. It need not be listed here.
Next, detail the positions of each side of the ethical debate. Note at least two moral reasons each side presents to show their view on the topic is correct.
Now, we want to evaluate these positions using the moral theories we studied this week:

"Carefully lay out and explain Plantinga's argument for this conclusion. In doing so be sure to identify premises, including any implicit premises, and intermediate conclusions; and show how the premises link together to support the conclusion. Attempt to make clear the structure or form of the argument. Where possible, identify any common valid argument forms used in the argumentation."
PASSAGE: "From Alvin Plantingas book Knowledge and Christian Belief page 39:
[I]f theistic belief is true, then it seems likely that it does have warrant. For if it is true, then there is indeed such a person as God, a person who has created us in his image (so that we may resemble him, among other things, and having the capacity for a knowledge), who loves us, who desires that we know and love him, and who is such that it is our end and good to know and love him. But if these things are so, then God would of course intend that we be able to be aware of his presence, and to know something
How can philosophy relate to your life?
There is no right or wrong answer to this question. You can even say, "it doesn't" if you like. However, there are a few certain things you need to do while giving your answer. These include:
- Provide a clear explanation and exposition of what you take the question to mean. In other words, what does it mean for anything, at all, to relate to one's life? Please explain to me the question as if I had not idea what you were writing the essay about.
- Clearly state your "Thesis" in a sentence or two. You should be able to summarize your answer in an understandable way. The rest of your paper will elaborate and support your thesis.
Part of elaborating on your thesis will be giving a brief clarification of what "philosophy" means to you. (Maybe a good second paragraph in your paper . . . )
- Show evidence that you have familiarized yourself with the course material, and/or some otherwise philosophically relev

Rather than living in chaos, danger, and the hostility of our neighbors, we find ways to live together. It isn't easy, but can we avoid doing so?
If everybody has self-interest in their own welfare and safety, then everybody also has self-interest in the welfare and safety of others. Self-interest involves community interest, and we must think about what we are willing to give up in order to get that safety and stability for ourselves, our families, our community, our nation, and even the world.
Thomas Hobbes and John Locke are just two examples of social contract moralists. Locke's philosophy helped Thomas Jefferson formulate the United States Declaration of Independence. We are interested in what it means to live together in an orderly way under a social contract.

Find a claim Mill makes in the reading for this day that he also backs up with evidence, and discuss both the claim and the evidence. In the course of your discussion, do the following:
1. Restate the claim in your own terms.
2. Restate the evidence Mill gives for his claim in your own terms.
3. In your second paragraph, say whether you think Mill is correct or incorrect in his claim, in addition to the next step.
4. Examine Mill's evidence. Do you think it's true? If it is (or if it were) true, would it lead to the conclusion he is claiming?

Some people say, price, snob value, and value as relic have little to do with artistic merit. The first is to do with rarity, the fluctuations of collectors tastes, and the manipulations of the art dealers; the second is a matter of social rivalry; the third is psychological, to do with the way we treat objects.
Quiz4Do you agree with that? Why or why not?
