Guidelines for Philosophy 1301 Research Essays
Theme:
The research paper should focus on the philosophical contributions of an individual in the Western tradition. For this research paper, choose an individual from Socrates to the 1950's C.E. This individual should not include religious figures although some scientific individuals may be appropriate in the period when science and philosophy were fused.
Although some biographical information should be included at the beginning of the essay, it should not be the focus of the paper. Instead, analyze one or two of the individuals major ideas/works and assess his/her contribution to the philosophical tradition and their impact today. You will need to access the library for databases and books to complete this assignment. You can do this online through the library guide for philosophy. I would expect to see at least 5 quality sources including background research and specialized research relating to you
your proposal should be about 250 words, it should include a link or embedded short educational video, such as from Youtube or a TED Talk, and you should relate your case study or environmental topic to one of our weekly, primary authors throughout the course. This list includes Holmes Rolston, Aldo Leopold, Rachel Carson, Arne Naess, Peter Singer and Paul Taylor. See the Course Outline of our syllabus for the weekly readings). You should also survey our Sustainability textbook for any relevant case study/topics or section(s) and include that in your proposal. However, you may select a case study or topic in the public domain, and include that reference material.
Aristotle believes that his concept of the mean can explain all human value. Explain how the mean leads to and supports his idea of virtue and explain how the mean is the foundation for all social relationships. Finally, do you think a good and functioning community requires care, as Aristotle describes it? Provide a pro-Aristotle and con-Aristotle argument to the question, and then, defend your position as to which side pro- or con- is most convincing logically.
[Hint: One major part to your answer should be Aristotle's understanding of different kinds of friendship. Also, you can relate the idea of care to whether we as a society need it to combat the Coronavirus Pandemic or systemic racism (use of W.E.B. Dubois reading may be beneficial).]

Words are powerful. While they have literal and "dictionary" meanings, they can be used in ways to influence and persuade people. They can be quick "shortcuts" that impede critical thinking. Certainly this is seen in all forms of political dialog. However, it can also be seen in professional and personal settings as well. The use of definitive words like: all, will, usually, etc. are used in situations that are may not be appropriate. Statements like:
Republicans are . . . Democrats are . . . Baptists believe . . . Catholics believe . . .
To disprove any of the statements above, all you need to do is find one Republican or one Democrat who "is not." Or, one Baptist or one Catholic who "do no believe . . . " Share your thoughts on the following questions:
What? - do you recognize the problem using definitive words in today's rhetoric
Why? - can the the use of definitive words be harmful in personal and profess
