In a post of approximately 250 words, choose one of the following prompts to discuss:

1. The Shipman's Tale, like the Miller's Tale, is an example of a fabliau. The humor and narrative action of this tale is precipitated and sustained by transactions that occur between the characters of the Monk, the Merchant, and the Merchant's Wife. Read lines 43 - 51, 170 - 192, and 269 - 294 closely. Interpret and analyze what happens in these lines and attempt to answer the following: How would you describe the nature of the transactions that take place in this tale? What goods or services are being exchanged? What does each character gain and/or lose? Of the three characters in this tale, who fares the best? Explain your logic.

2. The Parson's Prologue, the Parson's tale (as described in the footnote), and Chaucer's Retraction, taken together, can be read as a significant effort towards rectifying a wrong. Can you speculate as to why Chaucer "renounc[es]" se

You have been reading and thinking about assessing student learning this week.  There are many arguments for and against grades, as a way of providing a clear, understandable measure of learning.

For this discussion, choose a position, either for grades or against grades.  Make an argument supporting your position; provide theoretical and research support, rather than simply an opinion.  As part of your argument, address potential arguments against your position, as if preparing for a debate.  For example, if you present your argument, what might someone with a different opinion say, and how would you response to their opposition?

When you respond to peers, try to use critical reasoning to respond.  If you agree, provide additional resources and reasons. If you disagree, provide a cogent, coherent argument.

Week 1 Discussion

Choose a poem from the list below. Read all of the poems before making your choice; do not simply choose the first one you read. If a poem has already been discussed by two other students, choose another one from the list. We want to have an interesting discussion of a variety of poems! (Check the closed list and the discussion thread before posting.)

TIPS:

  • Do not repost the poem or directions in your response.
  • Use your poem's title as the title of your post, and put quotation marks around the title.
  • Mention the title and author in your post, and give specific examples from the poem to illustrate your points.

Discussion

Please watch the following TED Talk delivered by Alexandre O. Philippe on the topic of pop culture:

He is a believer in the power pop culture has to bring joy and unite people. After watching the talk, please respond by first reacting to his position of pop culture -> do you agree that we should see and uphold pop culture as a positive, unifying force? Why? Do you see any problems or have issues with his assertion? How might pop culture be a negative influence in our world?

Along with reacting to his presentation, you may reflect upon your experience with pop culture and share about one item either current or from the past that either supports the view that pop culture is a positive or that highlights how pop culture may be more negative.

A minimum 300 word original response by Tuesday, and at least 2 replies to your peers (~30 words) by the beginning of class on Thursday.
