Action On The IOM Report

Action on the IOM Report

An Institute of Medicine (IOM, 1999) report was a wake-up call for both the general public and healthcare providers regarding the problem and tragic consequences of medical errors. According to the report brief, "At least 44,000 people, and perhaps as many as 98,000 people, die in hospitals each year as a result of medical errors that could have been prevented" (IOM, 1999, p. 1). Alternative Assessments

There are various ways to assess students besides the traditional summative assessment with various forms for multiple choice questions, short answer, essay, etc. Often times, teachers have to think outside the box and develop assessments that assess the same content and standard, but are done in an alternative way. Providing a choice in assessment options, assessment instruction supports differentiation to meet the learning preferences of diverse students in the learning environment.

For this assignment, you will develop an alternative assessment that is aligned with the set of standards chosen for your benchmark, and appropriate for the grade level and content area of your practicum placement.

Part 1: Assessment

From your chosen state standard in your benchmark, create a student-centered learning experience and alternative assessment for students to do something (project, presentation, brochure, etc.) wi

Assignment 6

Assignment: Reflection Essay: Positive Social ChangeAn Evolving Perspective

As demonstrated in the first week of this course, there is no one single definition for terms such as social responsibility and social change. These are complex concepts determined by multiple factors. You may now recognize some of the key contributing factors that lead to social responsibility in action. Has your initial understanding of social responsibility and social change evolved through your work in this course? Have the shared comments of colleagues as well as the Learning Resources provided further insight into the value of working collectively to achieve social change?

In this Reflection Essay, you reflect on how this course has influenced your overall understanding and approach to positive social change.

Part 1: Pre-assessment and Implementation

Follow these steps for this weeks field experience:

  1. From your previous observation in your field experience classroom, you identified 3-5 students, above, at, or below standard achievement in the classroom environment that would benefit from additional learning support. You also identified the standards and unit that your mentor class is currently learning.
  2. With this information, complete the Math Pre-Assessment where you develop a pre-assessment in the math content area that aligns to the standards and unit that your mentor teacher shared with you during Clinical Field Experience A. This pre-assessment can be oral, written, or completed through technology. The pre-assessment should identify ho well selected students know the concept and provide data that would allow you to determine learning gaps and needs in order to develop an appropriate lesson to support learning needs.

Differentiation is one of the most important considerations when preparing a lesson plan for all students. Differentiation guides the teacher in making the instructional modifications required to meet the diverse needs of all students, plan for varying levels of development, and create opportunities for various approaches to learning and performance.

This lesson will be focused in the content area of geometry.

Part 1: Differentiation Lesson Plan

For this assignment, select a K-8 grade level and state standard in the area of geometry and use the "COE Lesson Plan Template" to design an original lesson plan. Be sure to examine instructional opportunities that can be adapted to meet the diverse needs of students, create learning environments that foster active engagement through supportive, and design assessments that align to learning objectives and support learning needs.
