Independent research on the following theorists are required to effectively complete this portion of the
assignment:
1. Jefferson - It was in America under Jeffersonian influence that the many negative European conceptualizations
of individualism unraveled and gave way to a notion of actual or imminent realization of the final stage of human
progress, an order of equal individual rights, limited government, laissez-faire, natural justice, and equality
of opportunity, which would lead to individual freedom, self-development, and dignity.
2. Gurvitch – Jeffersonian individualism is in stark contrast to Gurvitch’s notion of communion which he
describes as a state of the human mind being open as widely as possible and where the least accessible depths of

The example I am thinking of to use in this periodical is General Motors. GM has had many problems over the years
with many of its car companies, most notably Toyota. The good thing about GM is that it has many car
manufacturers under it so it's easy to pull many articles about different car manufacturers so long they fall
under GM (because the periodical only wants us to focus on a specific corporation).

Burns (2011) distinguishes between owner-managers and entrepreneurs and discusses a variety of factors which
“influence the decisions on whether to start up a business and whether to grow it” (Burns 2011, pg 34). Within
what he describes as ‘situational factors’, Burns highlights the importance of events which act as ‘triggers’ for
entrepreneurial activity,
“Most people, at some time in their life, have an idea that could form the basis for establishing their own
business. But few people choose to do so. What is needed is a trigger to spur them into action, to turn these
ideas into reality. These triggers can take the form of ‘push’ or ‘pull’ factors. Push factors are those that
push you into self employment – unemployment or forced redundancy, disagreement with your boss, being a ‘misfit’
and not feeling comfortable in an organisation and for some reason, or simply having no alternative because, for

Write a 1600 word summary and evaluation of one of the two articles listed below. A "review essay" is a
summary of your own words of the article you have chosen to review, together with an appraisal of it.
Your review essay should be about 50% summary and 50% appraisal. Summary means you summarize the
main points and explain the chosen article in your own words. Figures, tables, or equations in the article
may not be included in your essay. Appraisal means you express your thoughts about the article. For
example, whether the article is full of insightful remarks, whether the article gives adequate
consideration/analysis of the main issues, or if the article covers too much or too little ground, any
additional aspects should be included in the article. Your bibliography can be minimal.
A classical definition of strategy as a planned’ process is as follows:
... the determination of the basic long-term goals and objectives of an enterprise, and the adoption of courses
of action and the allocation of resources necessary for those goals. (Chandler, 1962, p. 13)
With reference to academic literature on the development of the field of strategy, critically evaluate the extent
to which this definition remains appropriate today.
