Essay Question
The construction of the Garden Palace for the Sydney International Exhibition of 1879 can be seen as an
early example of Sydney opening itself to global tourism. The Garden Palace was designed to house displays
of culture and industry and to woo crowds with its impressive scale and classical grandeur. Built mostly of
timber, the Palace caught fire and was destroyed on 22 September 1882. There are other examples of when
Sydney has undertaken large architectural works to attract a global tourist market. The Darling Harbour
precinct, with its exhibition centre, maritime museum, hotels, restaurants and entertainment venues was
designed to draw the interest of the global tourist market and provide Sydney with a playground for cultural
activity, recreation and entertainment. Like the Garden Palace, Darling Harbour also relies on display and
spectacle for its attraction. These are just two examples of how architecture in Sydney has been created for
the pleasures of global tourism. By considering these two examples, or others, examine how certain buildings
and areas in Sydney cater for the global tourist market and what their architectural characteristics are. A
question to consider: with the emphasis on non-threatening experiences and display for global tourism, does
architecture risk falling victim to a pastiche version of culture and history?
