Ancillary Program Considerations Custom Essay

1. Ancillary Program Considerations (1 page)
You have been asked to evaluate a series of programs designed to remove a population of homeless transients from their make-shift homesteads in a popular city park. Many of these transients suffer from severe mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. Others are known drug addicts and dealers. Some are children and their parents, others children living in the park with no known parents or guardians. Many are alcoholics, most are armed and defensive of their perceived territories. Discuss the ethical implications of implementing a program to clear these individuals from the park. What types of ancillary programs would be needed to ensure the success of the primary program? How would you measure the success of the primary and secondary programs? What conflicts of interest could be present and how would you avoid them?

2. Presenting Program Outcomes (1page)
You have been asked to present the results of the park “beautification” program discussed in Ancillary Program Considerations (see above) to the mayor and city council. What are the key elements that you should present to executives at this level? How do you address the ethical issues identified earlier? How can you ensure that your presentation presents the actual results in an unbiased, truthful manner? What, if any, information should not be shared with executives? One council member has extreme objections to the handling of the unaccompanied minors. How do you defend your handling of this subset of the program population?

3. Less Lethal Technologies (1page)
Some of the most widely implemented, and widely controversial, programs in criminal justice involve the application of less lethal weapon technologies. These technologies include devices such as tasers, OC spray, batons, canine units, bean-bag rounds, flash bangs, etc. Departments using these technologies integrate them into their use of force continuums which puts these technologies into a scale that generally ranges from verbal contact to lethal force.

What are your thoughts on how these technologies are used in criminal justice today? Should departments expand their use? Reduce their use? What are appropriate uses for less lethal technologies? Inappropriate uses? If the use of these technologies is associated with a suspect death, what are the ramifications? What should they be? What policies and evaluation protocols should departments implement when they choose to incorporate these technologies into their use of force arsenals?
