Mexican Revolution
Introduction:
Francisco Madero had attempted to defeat the long standing Mexican president, Porfirio Diaz, though the ballot box. As election day got closer and he became more popular than ever, Diaz had him arrested and imprisoned. When the ballots were counted, Diaz overwhelmingly won the election. This was clearly electoral fraud and released, Madero fled to the north and into the United States. The first document here, the Plan of San Luis Potos, was issued by Francisco Madero during his exile in San Antonio, Texas. In it, he calls for the removal of President Porfirio Diaz through revolution. It was this document and the actions that followed that mark the beginning of the Mexican Revolution.
The second document was written by revolutionary leader Emiliano Zapata, calling for the removal of President Francisco Madero. According to Zapata (and others), Madero had betrayed the revolutionary cause despite the fact that President Diaz had been removed from power. It is this document that changes the fundamentals of the Mexican Revolution and develops the rebellion into a full-scale social revolution.
