In this paper, you are to write an intelligent, informed response to an illustration by Jean Fouquet in a late version of the GrandesChroniques de France (Paris, BibliothèqueNationale de France, Ms. Fr. 6465; dated 1455-1460).  Your focus is on the representation of the Coronation of Charlemagne at Rome (fol. 89v) and the same scene in the manuscript fromBibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève Ms. 782, fol. 121v (Hedeman, The Royal Image, fig. 6).  After examining both works closely, discuss the scene painted by Fouquet and how it differs from the thirteenth-century example.  Describe any differences you detect in style,iconography, emphasis, or ideology, including attitudes toward Charlemagne.

 

This paper may be less formal in its style than others you compose for art history courses.  It should use the first person – the “I” pronoun.  The point is to express in your own voice your impressions of the illustration from Fouquet’s manuscript, including your subjective responses to it, as well as your more learned observations about the imagery you see.  Just because it may be more casual in tone does not mean that it can be full of grammatical errors and slang.  But you should use the opportunity to focus on developing your writing style.

 

In order to write a respectable paper, you will need to have read carefully and digestedHedeman’s selected chapters, as well as the readings on Charlemagne.  Please use end notes in your paper when citing course readings, according to the format I have shown you in class.  Note:  THIS IS NOT A RESEARCH PAPER.  Papers that present research-based observations will not be marked.  The paper is intended to help you develop your skills in reading, writing, and close looking, and looking up more information will detract you from those tasks at hand.
