PowerPoint Presentation plain, Journalism, mass media and communication
Project description
Your presentation must include the following four components:
Identify a media text, object, event or practice that is significant to you.
This can include anything from watching your favourite tv show to throwing tvs out a window. You can choose any media object to write about: internet-based, print-based, radio, film, etc. And your engagement can be daily (checking email, listening to an ipod) or irregular (being an extra in a film, having a picture of you published in a local paper).
Critically reflect on your engagement.
Your must reflect on your media engagement and how this engagement impacts your life. Using the examples above, you might ask: Why is this particular television show my favourite? What was the motivation or interest in it? How do I feel about it? How does watching it structure my time or affect my relationships with other people? And likewise, why did I throw those television sets out the window? When did I get the idea to do this? How do I feel about it? What might have been the motivation or catalyst for my action? What were other peoples response to your actions?
Apply theory to your case.
What theories have you encountered in this course that might help you to make sense of, explain, or further a critical understanding of your media engagement? For example, do you think you and your friends love to watch Breaking Bad because of the spectacle it offers? Did you throw those television sets out the window because Rupert Murdoch hardly pays any income tax even though he has media ownership of 50 television stations in the US alone? This component of your analysis should bring together your personal experience and the ideas we are working through in this course. You must use at least 2 course concepts or theories, making sure both to define the concept and discuss how it helps in the analysis of your case.
Discussion questions.
Come with at least two questions to critically engage the class in a discussion on your case study and concepts.
Assessment:
You will be assessed according to:
clarity of presentation (e.g. outlining what you will cover, speaking clearly, effectively using the allotted time)
coherency of the case study and critical engagement with it (e.g. going beyond simply liking it or it is what your family did)
appropriate use and relevancy of concepts (including their definition, and application to the case)
use of visual aids and proper referencing

Additional info teacher gave:presentation in which you discuss an example of your engagement with media (choosing an object, event, or practice) from your social life. You will be asked to: 1) identify a specific mass communications practice that is significant to you (e.g. watching a live performance, protesting CCTVs in public space, using a dating app), 2) critically reflect on this practice within the context of your social life, and 3) apply theories and concepts from class to critically analyse it. A visual element (such as slides or handouts) must accompany your presentation, including one that provides your bibliography.
