‘ The Melbourne Story’, Melbourne Museum.

‘ The Melbourne Story’, Melbourne Museum. How does your chosen exhibition portray a visual record of Australian cultural life, history or environment?

Philosophy
Paper instructions:
Question: How does your chosen exhibition portray a visual record of Australian cultural life, history or environment?

Focus your answer on one section/sub-section or room of the exhibition space, or some selected works across the exhibition that are related by theme. You must refer to AT LEAST 3 specific artworks or objects/displays.
In addressing the question you should focus on a particular theme – such as ‘landscape’, ‘migration’ or ‘gender’. Consider how the exhibition juxtaposes contemporary and historical imagery and to what effect. Think about the way the exhibition space has been arranged and why certain artworks and objects have been placed near each other. Think also about the way particular themes are explored throughout the whole exhibition space. For example, you could compare and contrast the ways in which Melbourne’s identity as a city has changed across time, drawing on ‘The Melbourne Story’ display. For the ‘Identity’ exhibition at the Immigration Museum you could consider how objects are used to explore the experience of migration to Australia or how one particular display investigates ethnic diversity in Melbourne.
This Exhibition Review will require students to:
demonstrate an adequate understanding and interpretation of the question
express ideas in coherent sentences, not bullet points
be reflective and analytical and not just descriptive, that is, the review will do more than simply report on what is at the site. It should have an argument!
be original in their response to the exhibitions, that is, the essay should demonstrate that you have personally visited and engaged with the material at the site. The review will not just parrot or reproduce chunks of information from websites or secondary texts.
make appropriate reference to broader issues and debates signalled in the lectures and the reading. You are expected to refer to the arguments cited in at least 4 sources and to situate your review in this scholarly context
follow proper procedures for referencing and footnoting – see the School of Historical and Philosophical Studies website for more details: http://shaps.unimelb.edu.au/students/essay-guide/
include a Bibliography of works cited.
Please note that this essay is designed as a review of the exhibition and does not require extra research. You can refer only to secondary sources found in the subject reading material, but make sure you engage with these readings.
This task is due at the end of the first week of class so that it can be graded and returned with comments during the final week. We have designed this task as an opportunity to receive feedback on your skills that can then assist you with the completion of the research essay.
