Enlightenment and the Age of Reason
Enlightenment and the Age of Reason
Research an American literary movement, philosophy, period, style, or genre for the time period covered in the course (choices follow). Select one of the following topics for your paper: Literature of the Colonial Period; Literature of the Revolutionary Age; Literature of the Early National Period; Romantic Period in America/Romanticism; Transcendentalism; Native American literature/oral tradition; Puritan literature; Enlightenment and the Age of Reason; or
Abolitionist literature/captivity narratives.
Be sure to focus on American literature rather than European literature. Include in your paper general and specific information about your topic based on research, with sources cited in MLA style. In your essay be sure to define your topic clearly, explaining the literary period, movement, or genre in detail. Discuss major themes, characteristics, and influences. Explain how it is similar to or different from other periods or styles. Be sure to discuss exemplary works and key authors related to your topic. Cite sources according to current MLA guidelines. Cover your topic thoroughly!
Utilize a variety of sources. You will conduct library research for this assignment. You should use scholarly sources, such as those found in the Literary Reference Center and Literature Resources from Gale databases. You may access these resources through JSCC’s online library or visit one of the libraries on campus. You may use a couple of .edu or .org websites such as the ones included on our
course site, as long as they seem credible, to supplement your research. You may use your textbook as one of your sources. This should be a synthesis of sources. Avoid relying too heavily on any one source in a single paragraph in your essay. Try to utilize a variety of sources to support each main point. Be sure to balance your paper with plenty of your own words, explanation, and examples. You must use and cite at least 5 sources in your essay.
Develop a thesis for your essay—the argument or central idea you want to express or explain about the topic. (What do you want to say about American romanticism, for example?) You will probably base your thesis on information you find while researching your topic. Support your points with your research
