Creating a Directory Structure For this assignment you will use some very basic procedures for file management.
You will be expected to:
1.Create a parent directory and subdirectories (which are also called "folders") in a location of your choice on your computer storage device.
2.Download files from the courseroom and save them in the directories you have created.
3.Rename the files you have saved in your directories as follows:
?Using Windows Explorer (Windows Explorer is the program that opens when you use "My Computer" or "Computer" under the START menu), select a location on your disk drive where you want to store your files for this course. It is preferred that you create your course directory in the root of your c: drive, but you may prefer another location for some reason. Create a directory named psy7615 in the chosen location. Within the psy7615 directory, create two subdirectories named first and second.
?Download the file jfile.sav into your subdirectory which is named first.
?Copy the jfile.sav file to the subdirectory named second, and rename the file as kfile.sav.
?Create an ASCII text listing of your psy7615 directory and all subdirectories within it. See the help file below for specific instructions on this process. Name the directory listing file as dirlist.txt. As an alternative option, if you have software to create zip files, and you know how to compress the psy7615 directory into a single zip file, you may attach the zip file to your assignment in place of the directory listing.
?Attach the "dirlist.txt" file to your assignment and submit it (or submit the psy7615 zip file). The contents of this file will show me that you have downloaded and renamed your files as requested in the assignment, and that you have created your course directory hierarchy properly. You can open the dirlist.txt file in Notepad if you are curious about its contents.
Please study the u01a1 Detailed instructions document below if you need additional information to complete the assignment.
Usually, a different procedure is used when downloading data files than what is used when viewing documents. For example, when you click on the u01a1 Detailed Instructions link below, you will probably be notified that the file being accessed is an Adobe PDF file, and you may simply choose to open the file in the Adobe Reader and read it on the screen.
The procedure should be a little different when downloading data files. When you click on the "jfile.sav" link below, you will usually be given the option to either open the file in IBM SPSS, or to save the file. With data files, you should always save the data file on your machine and later use IBM SPSS to open it. Obviously, when you save the data file on your machine, you should save it to your psy7615 directory. Be sure you do not leave this unit without learning how to control the download process on your machine and learning how to download data files to a location where you can later find them and retrieve them.
