American Presidency
This assignment includes three essay questions on the American Presidency. The answer to each question should be at least one page in length, for a total of 4–5 pages. Essays should be typewritten on standard-sized pages (8.5? x 11?), double-spaced, 12-point font, and margins of approximately 1? on all four sides. Essays that fail to follow these formatting guidelines, and essays that are grossly insufficient in terms of length (i.e., fewer than 3 full pages), are subject to grade penalties. The total number of pages should not exceed six.
Papers will be graded according to the quality of the arguments and evidence of critical thinking therein. I AM NOT INTERESTED IN YOUR FEELINGS OR EMOTIONS CONCERNING THESE TOPICS; INSTEAD I WILL BE LOOKING FOR EVIDENCE OF INTELLIGENT REFLECTION AND REASONING ABILITY. NEITHER AM I INTERESTED IN READING A PRESIDENTIAL BIOGRAPHY! MORE THAN ANYTHING, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR YOU TO *READ* THE QUESTIONS CAREFULLY AND ANSWER THEM APPROPRIATELY. Whether or not your conclusions agree with mine is irrelevant; what matters is that you are able to present them in a logically compelling and persuasive manner. Furthermore, severe deficiencies in spelling, punctuation, grammar, syntax, and diction will be reflected in your grade.
RECALL, AS PER SYLLABUS, THAT INSTANCES OF PLAGIARISM WILL RESULT IN A SCORE OF “ZERO” FOR THE ASSIGNMENT AND A REFERRAL TO THE STUDENT JUDICIAL SYSTEM AND/OR THE ACADEMIC DEAN.
ESSAY QUESTION #1 (at least 1 page): One often hears—in the popular news media as well as in academia—discussions about “great presidents” and “bad presidents.” Is a good president one who is successful in implementing his campaign platform? Is it someone who respects the constitutional demands of the presidency and meets them effectively? Does presidential greatness have anything to do with personal character? Ideology? Reflect thoughtfully on what makes an American president a great/good/successful president, suggesting at least three criteria for determining greatness. MAKE THE THREE CRITERIA YOU ARE CHOOSING CLEAR TO ME. Second, reflect thoughtfully on what makes an American president a bad/horrible/failed president, offering at least three criteria for determining a failed presidency. MAKE THESE CRITERIA CLEAR AS WELL.
ESSAY QUESTION #2 (at least 1 page): Name two presidents that you consider great/good/successful/effective on the basis of your chosen criteria. Explain WHY they qualify as such—citing their accomplishments THAT MEET YOUR CRITERIA—in your answer.
ESSAY QUESTION #3 (at least 1 page): Name two presidents that you consider bad/horrible/unsuccessful/ineffective on the basis of your chosen criteria. Explain WHY they qualify as such—citing their actions (or lack thereof) THAT MEET YOUR CRITERIA—in your answer.
***DO NOT CITE: William Henry Harrison, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, or Barack Obama.
***EXCEPTION TO THE ABOVE RULE: If you want to argue that Lincoln or Franklin D. Roosevelt were BAD presidents, you are welcome to do so; they cannot, however, be cited as examples of good presidents.
***HINT: Anything a president does before or after leaving office is NOT considered valid evidence for meeting your criteria. For example, the fact that Thomas Jefferson was the principal author of the splendid Declaration of Independence does NOT make him a great president. He wrote the Declaration 25 years before becoming president!
