The aim of this literature review is to Critically review the recent theoretical and empirical literature on the

impact of employee engagement in contemporary employment relations. The literature review must look at a specific

area of Employee engagement, for which I have chosen "The shift in perceptive towards engagement that is

literature.

The literature review should be structure with an introduction, main body and conclusion and should only be a

critical review of academic literature and not involve personal ideas or thoughts on the topic.

furthermore, the conclusion of this review should outline some of the research gaps, evaluate the supportive and

 Is the area of focus/ general topic well explained?
 Have you identified the overall trends in what has already been published?
 Is the purpose of the review made evident to the reader?
 If you are introducing new terminology or concepts as part of the review, are these defined or clarified?
 Is the organization of the review made evident to the reader?

Main body – Presentation of Studies Being Reviewed
 Does the presentation of the studies within sections include a storyline, that is, is the connection between

each piece of literature made explicit for the reader?
 When an item of literature is introduced, is it summarized for the reader in terms of what the authors did,

when they did it, how they reached their conclusions, etc.?
 Have you been critical about each piece of literature?
 Do you provide summary sentences at the end of sections to help the reader understand what the main issues are?

Main body – Evidence of Analysis, Synthesis, Critique Taking Place within the Review
 Have you gone beyond merely summarizing the studies? Is there evidence of analysis and critique of individual

studies?
 Is there evidence of analysis and synthesis across the studies? Do you compare and evaluate each item of the

literature? Are the messages that emerge from the literature made evident? (This may involve comparing results,

identifying differences among a number of studies).
 Are the gaps, problems, central issues, debate, or issues unresolved by the literature clearly identified?
 Do you provide evidence to support the arguments, analysis, and criticism being made? Is the evidence

sufficient and convincing?
 Does your voice come out as separate and distinct from that of the authors you are summarizing, critiquing, and

reviewing?

Conclusion to the Review
 Does your conclusion summarise the literature maintaining the focus presented in the introduction?
 Have you overall evaluated the current “state of the art” pointing out gaps in the literature and

inconsistencies?
 Have you been able to identify the contribution made by your review efforts?
 Have you made suggestions for research that needs to be conducted in the future?

Organization and Writing Qualities of the Review
 Have you used appropriate headings to group the literature according to themes? Specifically, have you grouped

research studies and other relevant literature appropriately according to common themes?
 If there are sections within the review are these logically ordered and clearly explained to the reader?
 Have you provided clearly articulated transitions between sections? (Is the storyline easy to follow?)
 Is each item in the literature review cited appropriately?
 How are quotes used? (If included, they should only be used when you cannot paraphrase the message easily.)
I hope this information gives you a good description of the literature review.
