Miley Cyrus is a female artist who is followed by controversy following much exposure of her body in some of her music videos and performances. Wrecking Ball is an example of the songs that have been hitting You Tube records for showing the famous pop star fully naked. The Music video has received much criticism with claims that the nudity is seen as female degradation, and should not be encouraged. However, the theme of the song itself contains much substance, but the nudity has smothered it, and therefore, receiving the negative publicity (Taylor, 2013).
Miley’s actions in the music video show sex obsession of the artist. In various instances, Miley can be seen licking the hammer suggestively, and this is against the artistic merit. Her use of sexual images and exposure has led to the debate on whether she is empowering or degrading women (Messer, 2013). In the song, she sits on the large ball while nude and swings it suggestively. Men who watch the video song, in most cases, view her as a sex object because of lack of self-respect and dignity. Though she may perceive that nudity and other vulgar tactics such as seduction may be instrumental in her career, she can still develop it through her vocal talent (Messer, 2013).
Vulgarity in music videos should not be encouraged in any case. It demeans the value of women in the society at a higher rate than it empowers their careers. Miley should understand that she could still stand alone without involving nudity. It becomes more difficult when her fans are watching the songs with younger children because music, in most cases, is not censored. The pop culture today and other musicians, therefore, should draw a thick line between objectification and femininity (Hobza, 2014).
