19th century photography
Please draw from lectures and readings and be as specific as you can be. Each essay should be about 2-3 pages in length, standard 12 point font, 1″ margins, double-spaced. In total, you will write 3 essays.
1. Using Alexander Gardners Home of a Rebel Sharpshooter (1863) as your main example, please discuss the use of photographs in relation to the American Civil War. Your essay should include a thorough discussion of the idea of the photographic document as addressed in readings and lectures.
2. Using The Steerage (1907) as your main example; a) please discuss the contributions of Alfred Stieglitz to modernist photography; b) and relate his aesthetic philosophy to formalist criticism.

3. Using Emersons Throwing the Cast Net (1886) as your main example, please discuss early pictorialist ideas in relation to photography. Include specific details about the techniques, subjects, relations to past art forms, and so forth. Also, include the photographers opinions as expressed in his writing on the subject.
4. Using William Henry Jacksons The Mountain of the Holy Cross (1873) as your main example, please explain the most important aspects of 19th century landscape photography in the United States. Your discussion should include explanations of pantheism, The Sublime and Manifest Destiny.
