This quarter weвЂTMve been taking a cursory look at the relationship between artists and social change. We began by considering the words of Cornel West, who argued that art is inseparable from politics; and that art is unsettling, challenging, and inspiring, all while embodying the struggle for freedom and justice. We then looked at the question in our synthesis papers of whether art should be political, and if so, how?

It is now time for you to provide your own point of view on this subject via a well-researched essay on the artist and social struggle you have been exploring this quarter.

For your research paper, I would like you to formulate your own answer to the question, is art an effective means to facilitate social change? Your essay should 1) introduce a contemporary social problem; 2) show how your artists have chosen to respond to that issue; 3) and finally, whether you think social change (movement toward love, freedom, and justice) is possible from listening or hearing these artistic expressions. Why or why not?

The details of the essay are as follows:

2000-2500 words.
A clear, compelling, and focused thesis statement, and be supported by well-researched claims.
It should be easy to read and comprehend, be free of grammatical errors and typos, and possess smooth transitions and concise sentence structure.
Demonstrate the complexity of the issue. You need to acknowledge the diversity of opinions on the subject, while still articulating your own strong viewpoint.
Your paper will have ten sources and be a mix of popular and scholarly.
