Colliding Forms/Synthesis Essay (compare & contrast)

Guide Line
Following the examples we’ve discussed in class, create a short essay (4 pp.) which compares and contrasts, and even attempts to synthesize, two short-form works of art in different mediums, one of which should be a song. You may be allowed to use one of the works we’ve already discussed, with my permission. In addition to citing both of these primary sources, you will need to utilize at least two outside
sources with direct quotations. In addition, this essay begins to formalize the ‘thesis statement’ and tone, even if you choose a ‘braided’ essay structure.

Begin by finding your two primary sources. Most likely you’ll think of one immediately. While this may work, don’t be so attached to this choice that you sacrifice the quality of your project.
Look for sources which share some thematic concern. This will provide you with a stronger basis from which to work.
Remember that you have numerous aesthetic options available: besides the required song, you might choose a short film, a painting, a poem, a short story, a sculpture, an essay, etc. If you want to use one of the sources we discussed in class, I will heavily scrutinize your second source, looking to make sure that you bring something new to the discussion.
You’ll use most of the critical elements we’ve worked on so far: observation, description, analysis, and perhaps a small amount of personal narrative. (I don’t want a personal essay.)
To this list we add research and synthesis. The outside sources should help give you some ideas about ways to analyze your chosen works, and also provide you with some support for other ideas you may have. For this assignment, it’s okay to use reviews and brief articles so long as they come from credible sources. No blogs, no chat boards, no

Synthesis happens after analysis. Break down each work and look for ways that they connect and differ. The forms will obviously differ quite a bit, but you still may find some common elements. Generally you should focus on what each work has in common with one another.
Your essay may be structured creatively, by which I mean the “braided” essay format. Feel free to use headings, numbers, or other methods of segmenting the essay. You may, of course, use a more traditional format.
No matter which structure you choose, you’ll need to make sure you have a strong thesis statement that ties together the essay. We’ll talk more about this in class.
The song I chose: Halfway Home – Jason Mraz

I used to think that i could just sleep and then I’d dream
And everything it would come to me
Until I woke one day without anything to eat
Lying on the opposite side of the street
I’m halfway home and I’m still out on my own
I’m halfway there and I don’t care, I don’t mind
Because it ain’t my time to stay or sayƉ
I’ll never lay down.
I used to think that I could just sit and wait for the time
But I know I gotta meet them halfway
I’m halfway home I tried home running with the flow
I’m halfway there. Ain’t it funny how everybody seems to care
I planned to get there around supper time their serving up bread and wine
All I needed was a sign and I’ll be allright.
I’ll be fine.
