Journal

Description: Each journal entry should contain descriptions and analyses of arts experiences you have undertaken on your own as part of the course. These should include accounts of at least two visits virtual or real to exhibitions of visual art, and at least two attendances virtual or real at performances. They should include your responses to assign visits and attendances, as well as to those you choose for yourself.

These entries will, of course, demonstrate that you have done the required homework. They should also show that each week you have attended at least one show and visited at least on exhibition that you choose for yourself.

To get a good grade, you should also show that you have prepared for these experiences in advance by doing research. They should also show that you have understood and applied theoretical material and background introduced in class. They should also show that you observed the work carefully, and gave it your full attention.

Analyze a movie scene

Analyze one scene in God Father 1
Pick one of your favorite movies (or tv show/short film), something you've seen before and know well.

Pick a scene from the film, the most important/pivotal scene, or perhaps just your favorite one, or the most memorable. Analyze it using the terms of story structure as discussed in class.

Zooming OUT: Explain the scene in context of the larger narrative. Which part/act of the film does this take place? Does this scene contain any major plot points (example: an inciting incident that begins Act II), or is it not as important to the narrative and serves another purpose (example: a scene to set the mood, the develop characters, to build the world, etc). This can be just a paragraph or two of casual writing.

Zooming IN: Describe the beats of the scene, the individual moments. Identify the major beat, the key moment that the scene is building up to, the reason the scene is in the movie. Break down (if possible) the scene into the mi

1. Broken Blossoms is described by Roger Ebert as an interracial romance and by Julia Lesage as a "artful racism, artful rape." The short articles referenced are in the PPT. Review these two articles, consider their points, and either make an argument supporting one or the other case, or explain how the meaning is ambiguous. To make your case, you must analyze the shots and editing.

2. If you watched Birth of a Nation -- discuss the ways in which fiction influenced politics in the historical moment of 1915, and consider the objection of the NAACP to screenings of the film. Also discuss the film in light of current politics.

3. Watch Ava Du Vernay's "13th" and discuss Birth of a Nation in light of this film.

4. The PPT includes a Bangville Police film. Explain and discuss how the use of editing constructs suspense and humor in a sequence.

Art Appreciation 5

Write a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) document for each work of art that includes the question and answer. The Q&A must be filled out completely for Artwork #1-4. Questions could be regarding the media being used, why the work is significant, history of the work/artist, etc. Answers should not be yes or no responses, but instead should display your skills related to critical thinking, analysis, and interpretation of the artwork. Upon completion of the FAQ, choose one of the pieces of artwork and write a 1 page critique. This art criticism is where you go beyond description and offer an informed opinion about the work. Your critique should interpret meaning and include critical judgments about the specific work of art.
